Since I arrived in Boston, the opportunity to continue my education in Boston University always loomed as a highly attractive prospect. Going to Boston University for my Undergraduate degree would allow me to meet all my expectations of college studies. On the one hand, it would expose me to a diverse student environment and rigorous academic standards of the establishment. On the other hand, it would enable me to stay in the city I really came to love for its exquisite beauty and rich culture.

Enrolled at the moment in Dean College in Franklin, I have had plenty of opportunities to discover the unique academic atmosphere of Boston. In my mind, this is one of the places ideal for studying as it inspires one to delve in the depths of science and culture. I also enjoy its rich cultural life that gives one excellent possibility to engage in cultural initiatives of a very broad scope. This also complements students’ professional and personal development, helping them to take a broader view of life, not restricted to just academic perspectives. Strange as it may sound, my career began when I was only 8 years old. Starting to cook in my aunt’s bakery, I received my first non-family job in baking at 12, progressing to the position of pastry chef. One of the important debates in psychology centers on the number of intelligences. The proponents of one-intelligence model argue that humans possess only one general-type intelligence that governs the development of specific faculties, whereas their opponents claim the presence of multiple intelligences, providing different listings. Spearman’s Model of Intelligence and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences are influential in their respective paradigms. In this paper, we will review the tenets of each theory, trying to understand which of them is more in line with psychology today.

Spearman is a psychometric one in the sense that it seeks “to understand the structure of intelligence: the form it takes, its categories, and its composition” (ThinkQuest, 2000). When we were still children, we all learned an old proverb “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy”. In its most general meaning, leisure is discretionary time spent in non-compulsory activities. Either active or passive, this time is recreational, and this is probably one of the most important functions of leisure.

Thomas Hobbes called is “the Mother of Philosophy”, and Samuel Johnson expanded this idea, saying “All intellectual improvement arises from leisure”. Of no doubt outsourcing does have significant advantages. Great number of corporations has already accepted this policy of business and now faces numerous benefits. Transferring business functions may bring sound savings as business in low-cost countries is usually much cheaper than inside. If I were given a chance to meet anybody who has ever lived and spend the whole day talking to that person, I would choose the French Queen Marie Antoinette. The reason for my choice is not her extraordinary talents or achievements; instead, I am interested in how an ordinary woman could have made it through the turmoil of the dark times for the French monarchy, a difficult marital relationship and never lose her sense of dignity.

I admire Marie Antoinette first of all for having endured the challenge of spending all or most of her time in public when she was still the wife of the French dauphine when she had to “on my rouge and wash my hands in front of the whole world” (Wikipedia, 2006). To a certain degree, each of us has to endure the challenge of being in public with one’s thoughts and feelings, and I would ask her how she was able to withstand this trial. I would also ask her how she managed to remain modest and nice to people surrounding her so that Jeanne Louise Henriette Campan in his memoirs remembered of her as “unwilling … to be reminded of her elevation” (Campan, 2004, p. 10). School uniforms, in my deepest conviction, receive more attention than they should. After all, what a person wears should never eclipse what kind of person this is.
