Speech Essay Example

27 years ago I was sitting where you are sitting now. Since that time a lot has changed, and also little has changed. What has changed is easily visible: someone was a kid, and then he grew up and became a policeman. Somebody became a doctor, and somebody became a pediatrician. However, what has not changed stays unnoticeable from the outside. I mean, every adult is still a child inside. You kids look at us like we know the right things to do in every situation. You see, no one knows the right answer until the consequences are known. The only difference between you and adults is that we have succeeded and failed in different situations, and now we compare the current time with our past. That is what we call experience.

Nietzsche said: “What does not kill me makes me stronger,” and it is both true and lie. It is true because the more you encounter with a particular problem in your life, the easier it becomes to deal with it each new time. However, the thing that haunts you and tries to kill you, even if it does not succeed, will not make you happy. The things that will make you really strong are your friends and your family. Thus, you should make friends and be close to your family. When you fall, these people will help you to rise; when they are in trouble, you will help them. One hand washes the other, and both wash the face. Only together you can achieve great things. I was watching you for a long time, and I will continue doing this for the next four years. You know that my door is always open for you no matter what it is. No matter what, if you need someone to talk to, big or small problem, I will give you a hand.

I have said enough about helping each other and making friends. It is also important to say: “Do not make enemies.” Having an enemy is disadvantageous for both of you. It is disadvantageous for the whole society. However, do not be afraid to oppose other people’s opinions. There will always be those who stand in your way. In this case, you will understand that you are on the right path. Do not let such people decide for you what to do or whom to become. If you know what you are doing, do it no matter what. Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher, called this authenticity. Find out who you are and be your true self. Do what you want to do, what it feels like need to be done, and bear full responsibility for your action. That is what being adult feels like. Nobody will tell you what is the right thing to do when you searching your true identity. You will have to be creative; strong but flexible to reach your goal.

Let me ask you a question. How many of you have decided on their future profession? Please, raise your hands if you have decided. Good. Now I must say that those who raised their hands will find their life easier in the future. However, it is also ok if you have not still decided. You will find out it later, and it is possible that something great is waiting for you. You just have to realize what. The thing that may help you to find the answer is your passion. Try to recall your hobbies because they are necessary.

People say that you can transform your hobbies into your profession or business, but most of the times it is a big fat lie. Despite the fact that life almost always does not allow people to transform hobbies into jobs, they still can be applied somehow. Even if a hobby seems to be useless. Especially if your hobby seems to be as such. Later you will find out that your current occupation was preparing you for a great goal. Although now you do something without an understanding of how it will be used in the future, you are already preparing yourself. Such an incomprehension takes place because firstly you are in search. Then, when you have found your goal, you just pursue it. Thus, my only piece of advice concerning this issue would be: “Do something!” Except for doing nothing. And except for doing drugs. “Drugs are bad, m’kay?”

Now let us return to the problem of doing nothing. What do you think is the problem with idleness? Now I will tell you what I think about it. You see, when you are unoccupied for a long time, you become lazy, and laziness is the inability to work, to actualize your potential, and to entertain yourself. Laziness results in indifference, and together they kill an individual. Eradicate your laziness. Stay occupied all the time. Give yourself a rest by changing activities. There is “a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together.” When you are tired of studying, take a walk with your friends. When you are tired from speaking to people, spend some time alone. Compensate what you are doing with its opposite, but do not do nothing. Considering the fact that what you do now will shape your future, you may look at your everyday routine actions at a greater scale. Thus, you may see what has to be changed or preserved; which actions lead you to your goal or help in your search and which not.

There will be times when you expected to succeed in something, but instead, you fail. You have to know that it is normal, it is usual, and most important of all, it is good for you. Your failures redeem you from arrogance. Only through your failures, you can see your weaknesses. They are the messages, indications on the things you should work more. As I have said before, failures are an important part of your experience. Without them, you do not know which actions you should omit. Besides the fact that they are the opportunities for growth, you should love your failures because they also led you to your current situation. The world is not divided into black and white. Thus, the things, which you think are negative have also positive sides. Your failures made your present. My ones made me a person who I am now. They taught me compassion and connected me to the priceless people.

Maybe, my speech was not as entertaining as it might have been, but I told you the truth, the wisdom, which I collected and tested for decades. And if you listened attentively, it may save your time and give you directions in the times of uncertainty. Thank you all and remember that I’ll be there for you.
