Hector in the Iliad Essay

The
intensification of Hector’s image begins from the Book VI of the “Iliad”. Hector becomes a symbol of steadfastness of Troy, almost the aim of the Achaean’s struggle, because for the readers of the “Iliad” the death of Hector is equal to the downfall of Troy.

Nevertheless, Hector is killed by Achilles. Priam asks Achilles to give the Hector’s body, in turn offering him gifts. Achilles accepts gifts, returns Hector’s body, and promises not to disturb the Trojans until his body will consign to the earth. Early at dawn, Priam returns to Troy with the body of his son and begins grief. The old mother of Hector is crying, “Alas, my son, what have I left to live for now that you are no more? Night and day did I glory in you throughout the city, for you were a tower of strength to all in Troy, and both men and women alike hailed you as a god” (Homer and Butler 269). Corporate Governance Research Paper

What is Corporate Governance?
Corporations are powerful organizations that act as separate entities from its owners. Hence, contemporary views regarding the role of corporations in society recognize that there is a growing importance for regulations on the manners those companies (in particular their board of directors) behave and on their influence on stakeholders, both direct (e.g. shareholders and workers) and indirect (e.g. the general ethical sphere of a country).

Corporate governance, in a narrow sense, is a control mechanism, which aims to govern corporations and their managers to ensure the protection of owners’ interests. Such protection is necessary due to the separation of ownership and management in corporations, in particular in public companies, where holders of minority shares do not have a direct means to influence managerial decisions. ‘The Reader’ by Bernhard Schlink Essay

In
his 1995 novel The Reader, Bernhard Schlink provides a unique insight into the complexity of the German equivalent for ‘baby boomers,’ namely the generation that was born in the second half of the 1940s, which are often called “the lucky late-born.” Broadly speaking, the novel deals with an ambivalent love affair between Michael Berg, a teenager in the 1950s and the narrator of the story, and Hanna Schmitz, an illiterate streetcar conductor, who served as a guard in a concentration camp in Poland and later being accused for being responsible for the death of 300 female inmates in a burning church. The book is divided into three parts: Continue reading “‘The Reader’ by Bernhard Schlink Essay”

Should Genetic Engineering Be Controlled by Law?

Humanity
is facing a new age when controlling the very fabric of life by playing with the genes of living organisms is becoming a common practice. That new practice has turned into a powerful, profit driven and rapidly growing industry.

Genetic engineering is the process of transferring genes from one organism into another organism, thus transferring specific traits. The new altered organism is called a genetically modified organism.

Through the science of genetic engineering traits from completely different species can be inserted into each other. That field of science is new and not enough studies have been conducted, genetic engineering can be very dangerous for human health and the environment as well. It should be closely observed and restricted by law, so that precautions will be taken and the negative effects will be limited or prevented. The science of biotechnology is growing too fast without any sufficient study on the topic or adequate government regulations dealing with the problems of these genetically modified organisms. Operational Risk in the Financial Industry

Risk
management, as described by the Insurance Institute of America, is the process of making and implementing decisions that will minimize the adverse effects of accidental business losses of an organization. Throughout the past few decades, different industries experienced quicker globalization, deregulation, and a boost of activity surrounding new products, instruments, and services. An inevitable outcome has been an elevated exposure of various sources of risk for trading, construction, insurance and financial institutions. Results of risks occurring in corporations lead to damages and ultimately to financial consequences. The resulting value reduction, or losses can be characterized as financial risk. A large portion of these financial risks is attributed neither to market nor to credit risk, but rather to operational risk. Continue reading “Operational Risk in the Financial Industry”

Essay on Anorexia in the United States

The
ideal image of what a human body should look like is different for each and every one of us. Similarly, beauty is also in the eye of the beholder. For people suffering from anorexia nervosa, or just anorexia, their view is dangerously distorted and can be permanently harmful. Anorexia is affecting the lives of many young women in America. Cases show that 95% of those affected by anorexia are female, many of them in their adolescent years. The disorder affects the lives of these girls, causing permanent damage to their body and to their mind. The most common cases appear among teenage girls, but this is not always the case, teenage boys can develop the disorder as well. Symptoms of anorexia typically begin to expose themselves during early adolescence; but also are seen in young children and adults. In the United States, it is estimated that one out of every hundred adolescent girls has the disorder (Dryden-Edwards). Although this is the typical case seen, anorexia does not discriminate, and has potential to affect every race, gender and ethnicity. Research has proven however that Caucasians are more often affected than people of other racial backgrounds, and is often seen more in middle and upper socioeconomic groups. What holds true about this disease and is universal, no matter what, is that it’s a serious mental illness with the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. It is crucial for parents to recognize the symptoms of anorexia in their children and provide immediate help for those affected. Continue reading “Essay on Anorexia in the United States”

Essay: Free Access to Condoms

Sex
plays an important role in our lives – it takes away stress and helps us relax, keep us healthy and improve the immune system. But in order to enjoy sex we have to be well prepared for it and have the right knowledge on how to behave in sexual intercourse, otherwise in can lead to unexpected and unwanted consequences, like unplanned pregnancy or infections. In recent findings, it was noted that seven in 10 pregnancies in US, among unmarried women in their 20s are unplanned, reflecting the fact that a significant proportion of sexually active, unmarried young adults – who say they do not want to be parents right now – are not fully protecting themselves from pregnancy.

It’s also important to note, that if no protection is used, a chance of sexually transmitted infections increases and these infections are: STDs, HIV, and AIDS. All these infections are very hard to cure and very painful to carry, but it only takes a condom to save you from them, so why reject the help? Teen pregnancy rates in the United States have declined substantially since the early 1990s mainly due to positive changes in teens’ sexual behavior and contraceptive use. These are good news, but there are still plenty of adolescents, who don’t care about contraceptives, as they either do not know the consequences or because they do not have a right access to them. Biodiversity vs Species Diversity Essay

Biological diversity includes all organisms, species and populations living on earth or in a particular area. In other words, biodiversity reflects full diversity and variety of life on Earth. Biodiversity shows how healthy an ecosystem is – the healthier an ecosystem, the larger its biodiversity.

Biodiversity has three levels – genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.

A species is a group of plants or animals that are similar and able to breed and produce offspring under natural conditions. Species diversity is the number of different species of living things living in a particular area and all the differences within and between populations of species, as well as between different species.

Ecosystems change all the time – some of them faster, and some of them slower. Ecological succession is the changing cycle of communities or species that live in an ecosystem during a particular time period. There any minor changes even in relatively stable ecosystems. At any point of time, any ecosystem can become a subject to external forces, which can restart succession process. Continue reading “Biodiversity vs Species Diversity Essay”
